MALI - 2009: A midwife at work in the Kidal region of northern Mali. Around fifty midwives, trained by Medicins du Monde, have been traveling the desert since 2005 assisting nomadic women with childbirth. KANDAHAR, AFGHANISTAN - 2007: Policewomen from a special unit led by Officer Malalai Kakar. Kakar, 41, set up the policewomen department in Kandahar, the home of the Taliban in southern Afghanistan.
